Applying
Positive thinking to Overcome Failure
Throughout
your life there will be failures - whether you like it or not.
How
you view those failures and what you focus on will either help you overcome
them or push you into a downward spiral where you don't think you can
accomplish anything.
When
you apply positive thinking you prevent yourself from falling into that
downward spiral where you don't think things will ever get better.
When
you experience a failure the proper way to apply positive thinking is
to focus on what went well, what worked out and how you can overcome
failure. It means really looking at the positive side of what happened
and also learning from the mistakes.
You
should also think about what you want, the end result that you're looking
for.
If
you dwell on the mistakes then you're not applying positieve thinking
correctly. Instead, you're likely to keep creating more mistakes because
that's what your mind and subconscious mind are fixed on.
For
example: Your boss assigns you a project. You do your best but it doesn't
quite go the way your boss wanted. You think it went well, and you're
positive about the outcome. But your boss points out a number of flaws
or errors. He/she also points out the positive aspects of the job.
If
you respond by being dejected and only look at what he/she didn't like
then you're not really being very positive and you're not focusing on
the outcome.
Your
boss made some positive comments. There was room for improvement which
he/she pointed out. Take those comments as ways to improve, grow and
learn. Give yourself positive feedback by thinking about what went well.
Now think about the end result you want, which is to get the project
done right according to your bosses expecations. You don't focus on
the negative. You actually use the negative comments to create something
positive (the right end result) and you use the positive comments as
encouragement, which you can build on.
When
you experience failure it's important to acknowledge what didn't go
well. Learn from those mistakes and move forward by making changes in
how you do things so that you don't repeat the same mistakes. Be positive
by thinking about what you really want and knowing that you can achieve
your desired goals.
Then
think about what worked well, or what did turn out positive. If you
can't find anything then you're concentrating too much on the negative
aspects. You're just used to seeing all that went wrong and this is
a clear sign of chronic negative thiking. You have to put an end to
that and start thinking positive by forcing yourself to find the positive
aspects in situations where things didn't quite workout.
You
should also try to find positive situations in things that happen everyday.
You'll then train your mind to be more positive and plant positive thoughts
on your subcnscious mind which will lead to a more positive and uplifting
life.
When
you look for and think about the positive in different situations you
start to see and feel that you can achieve your goals. This leads to
greater confidence and a stronge belief that you will succeed. Once
this happens you start to attract more and more positive events.
Think
about what you want. In the example of the project assigned by your
boss that I just outlined, you have to think about what you want and
this means putting what you want into a positive context. In other words,
saying you don't want to upset your boss is not an example of thinking
about what you want. In that case you're looking at what you don't want.
You
may want to satisfy your boss, do a great job, do a fantastic job and
satisfy your boss or do everything really well. Regardless, all these
are looking at positive outcomes and not on what you don't want.
To
often you'll think about what you don't want and in so doing you'll
attract more and more negative situations and negative outcomes. A key
component of positive thinking is to think about what you want and not
what you don't want.
This
is the real power behind positive thinking. Once you start to apply
it everyday it spreads very quickly and leads to dramatic changes in
your life. But you have to do this everyday. Sure you'll have some negative
thoughts from time to time, and you'll think about some of the failures.
When that happens, learn and grow. Then push yourself to find the positive
things in those situations.
Here
are a few things you can do to overcome failure by applying positive
thinking:
